What is the safest area in Dublin?

Of all the safest areas in Dublin, the Docklands is arguably the most fancy. Nicknamed ‘Silicon Docks’, the area is essentially one huge, well-established tech scene. Not only is it teeming with Irish Mark Zuckerbergs (as socially awkward as ever), it really is a safe area.

Is Dublin 7 safe? Dublin 7 is recovering from a reputation of being a rough neighbourhood. Those parts of Dublin 7 that are relatively close to the City Centre are affected by the inner city issues such as bike theft, late night antisocial behaviour, drug use and so on.

Is Coolock safe?

Like other Dublin areas, some of which have been covered previously in this column, such as Finglas and Clondalkin, Coolock has been branded as dangerous in the past. And there are troubled parts to it. Darndale most notably has a reputation that precedes it.

According to official statistics, Dublin West – which covers suburbs including Blanchardstown and Finglas – had the city’s third-highest crime rate in 2018 (although it was significantly lower than crime in inner city areas, at 539 offences per 10,000 population).

Is Coolock nice?

It’s fair to say that Coolock isn’t the most desirable area of the city, but it should not be dismissed – it has lots of amenities, good transport links, affordable housing and a very settled population, many of whom have been there for generations.

Re: Is Smithfield a good place to stay? It is an absolutely fine area and a good base IMO. Smithfield had a reputation for being rough a few years ago, but I wouldn’t call it anywhere near ‘notorious’.

However, like all cities it has its bad areas. Typically speaking the north side (north of the river liffey) is considered more risky. When bars and clubs close at night there there can be a bit of commotion on O’connell street but it’s usually just a bit of fun.
