Powdered (or icing) sugar is not referred to as white sugar. If your recipe just says sugar, it means white or granulated. If your recipe is British, and it says caster sugar, they sell a sugar that is just a bit finer grain than American white sugar. However, you can substitute granulated for caster sugar.

What can I substitute for white sugar in brownies?

In most baking recipes, you can substitute brown sugar for white sugar in a one-to-one ratio. So if your recipe calls for 1 cup white sugar, swap 1 cup brown sugar. The sweetness level will be exactly the same, but the brown sugar may change the texture of your baked goods.
