Can I use STEM OPT twice?

A student may participate twice in the STEM OPT extension over the course of their academic career. Students may not apply for STEM OPT extensions during the 60-day grace period following an initial (usually 12-month) period of post-completion OPT.

Is STEM OPT eligible for 180 day extension?

If you file your STEM OPT extension application on time and your OPT period expires while your extension application is pending, we will automatically extend your employment authorization for 180 days.

Can OPT be extended beyond 3 years?

With the interim final OPT extension rules, if a student has a degree that falls in STEM Degree Category, they can get another OPT extension for about 24 months, which makes your overall OPT stay for anywhere up to 36 months. All these rules have to met in order to maintain the 24 month OPT in proper status.

What majors qualify for STEM OPT?

A 24-month OPT extension is available for the following STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) degree holders:

  • Actuarial Science.
  • Computer Science Applications:
  • Engineering.
  • Engineering Technologies.
  • Biological and Biomedical Sciences.
  • Mathematics and Statistics.
  • Military Technologies.
  • Physical Sciences.

Can STEM extension be denied?

Normally, if your OPT/STEM OPT Extension is rejected, you must file a completely new application withUSCIS. If the application is rejected after your filing deadline (the end of the 60-day grace period for OPT; end of the OPT EAD for STEM OPT) refiling would normally be denied.

Can Opt be extended due to Covid 19?

Student has a second STEM degree at a higher level than the one used for the first STEM OPT extension. Student has not already based any portion of a STEM OPT extension on the second STEM degree. Second STEM degree meets all the above requirements.

Can I use the 24 month OPT extension for my degree?

STEM Degree : If your degree falls under STEM Category and you have not used your 24 month STEM OPT extension for your first degree either Masters or Bachelors level, then you may be eligible to use that 24 months OPT extension. You will need to speak to DSO on this and get this clarified.

What is the opt limit for STEM students?

The exception to the 12 month OPT limit is for individuals with STEM degrees. Students in STEM fields are eligible for a 24 month OPT extension that can be used at either the Bachelors or Masters level. Crucially, this extension may be obtained even if your second Master’s degree is not in a STEM field, as long your first Masters was.

Can I apply for opt twice for my master’s degree?

Even if your Master’s degree is an entirely different field, you will not be eligible for another 12 month period of OPT. However, there are options for obtaining a second OPT, discussed in the following section.
