It’s even more likely to happen if the soap contains a high percentage of butters, waxes or dry ingredients. Adding honey to cold process soap can cause an extreme gel phase, which can lead to the soap cracking.

Why did my cold process soap separate?

Separation occurs when the fragrance oil can’t be mixed into the soap batter, and oil slicks can start to pool on top of the batter. This is from a different batch of soap, but it shows a more intense example of separation. Notice the pockets of oil where the fragrance oil is pooling around the batter.

How do you fix an overheating soap?

Reason: Soap has extremely overheated. This could be from working at high temperatures, high natural sugar ingredients (beer, pumpkin, honey, milk, etc), or a misbehaving fragrance oil. Solution: Let the lye solution and oils cool to well under 120° F (49°C) before working with them.
