Why does oily food make me cough?
When you eat or drink, it relaxes, allowing food and liquid to move into your stomach. Sometimes it doesn’t completely close after you eat or drink, allowing acid from your stomach to move up into your esophagus. This irritates your esophagus, which may cause you to cough.
What happens to throat after eating oily food?
There is a scientific explanation of why certain foods can cause sore throats. The explanation however is not because of the “heaty” nature, rather the explanation is closely associated with gastric reflux. A cartilaginous flap called epiglottis prevents the entry of food into the wind pipe by covering the opening of windpipe during swallowing. When we eat the food in hurry the epiglottis gets confused between the windpipe and the food pipe and the food goes into the wind pipe thus causing violent coughing.
