Should the NDA toughen up its cadets?

There is an overall consensus that physical and mental toughening of the cadets is necessary because it is an essential aspect of the ‘breaking-in’ process at the National Defence Academy (NDA). A young officer believes that it was the ‘unofficial punishments’ that prepared him to meet the physical standards expected of him later on.

There were instances at my time when cadets got fail in NDA training which is known as Relegation. Cadets who get fail in academics, or physical tests or even on disciplinary grounds, or due to prolonged absence from training are relegated for a period of 6 months.

What is it like to be an Ragda cadet?

Ragda ensures that only the toughest make through the ranks. If they cannot hack it, they certainly will not survive combat. Even many cadets share the same belief, with one cadet who does not wish to be identified saying “Ragda gives you spontaneous pain, but the ustaads are preparing you for a bright future, where you can face the enemy!”
