It’s entirely possible that some skills are easier for talented people to learn. So many people believe that writing is a talent. Instead, it’s a skill: Yes, it’s easier for talented people to learn how to do it, but anyone who is motivated can learn.

Unfortunately, those who graduate today with the ability to write have one more huge advantage: they’re rare. According to the most recent (as of this writing) Nation’s Report Card on Writing, only about a quarter of kids and graduates are able to write proficiently.

Ultimately, written expression is a gift that needs to be encouraged. And it’s a skill that can be practiced anywhere, by anyone, at any time. The thing to remember is that what links the two and makes for a truly successful writer is passion –the passion to hone writing as a skill, and then make it your very own!
