SQL is still a very valuable skill to learn and master. Despite the proliferation of many NoSQL and hybrid SQL-NoSQL solutions, a lot of analytics software interact through SQL to read the data. The database could be document or key-value oriented but it will most likely understand SQL queries (or a very close flavor).

1 Answer. SQL is not obsolete nor is it becoming so. There are plenty of programmatic interfaces that make it less of a requirement to learn it in the early stages of application development, but nothing replaces good knowledge about it.

As we can see, SQL is the most in-demand skill among all jobs in data, appearing in 42.7\% of all job postings. Interestingly, the proportion of data jobs listing SQL actually seems to be increasing! When I performed this same analysis in 2017, SQL was also the most in-demand skill, but it was listed in 35.7\% of ads.
