Is 5e balanced around magic items?
Short answer: Yes. Magic items are technically an optional rule, and DnD 5e is (allegedly) balanced so that the game works without magic items. But magic items are among the most flexible, interesting, and impactful rewards which a DM can offer their players.
How do you make items in D&D?
A character must have the spell slots and be able to cast a spell that an item will produce in order to imbue an item with that magic. This includes having and expending material components the spell requires. Magical items that do not produce spells still require spellcasters to create the item (such as a +1 weapon).
How do you use magic items in 5e?
Wearing and Wielding Items A magic item meant to be worn must be donned in the intended fashion: boots go on the feet, gloves on the hands, hats and helmets on the head, and rings on the finger. Magic armor must be donned, a shield strapped to the arm, a cloak fastened about the shoulders. A weapon must be held.
How many magic items do you need for level 5e?
Xanathar’s Guide says that over 20 levels, a party will find “roughly one hundred items.” According to my calculations, the party should find 101.8 items – pretty damn close to 100. Of these, 75 will be minor items, and only 7 will be magic weapons.
