How many Ultramarines successors are there?

This is something I can’t quite wrap my head around. The Ultramarines had the highest numbers after the heresy, but apparently only have 23 successors. Are all the 1,000 Space Marine chapters descended from the original Loyalist legions (not counting the Grey Knights)? If not, where does their gene-seed come from?
