How long did it take Clyde Tombaugh to find Pluto?

After ten months of very hard work, sometimes working through the night in an unheated dome, Clyde Tombaugh discovered an object he named Pluto. For many years, Pluto was considered to be the ninth planet in our solar system.

When and how was Pluto discovered?

February 18, 1930: Pluto Discovered Tombaugh took many photographs of the region of the sky where Lowell had predicted Planet X would be. He compared photos taken days apart by using a blink comparator, which superimposed the images of the two plates and blinked rapidly between them.

Who accidentally discovered Pluto?

Clyde Tombaugh
While using it to search for a new planet in 1930, Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto. The instrument allows the operator to switch the view back and forth between two photographic plates taken several days apart.

Pluto/Discoverers
The mystery of Pluto began long before Clyde Tombaugh’s momentous discovery. Astronomers in the 19th century knew the seventh planet Uranus as outermost planet in our solar system. But they believed something was gravitationally disturbing Uranus’ orbit, and they concluded another planet must exist beyond Uranus.

Was Pluto discovered by accident?

Pluto was discovered in 1930 by a fortunate accident. Calculations which later turned out to be in error had predicted a planet beyond Neptune, based on the motions of Uranus and Neptune. Tombaugh at Lowell Observatory in Arizona did a very careful sky survey which turned up Pluto anyway.

How was Pluto first discovered?

Pluto, once believed to be the ninth planet, is discovered at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, by astronomer Clyde W. On February 18, 1930, Tombaugh discovered the tiny, distant planet by use of a new astronomic technique of photographic plates combined with a blink microscope.
