Why do we celebrate Daan Utsav?

Daan Utsav or the Joy of Giving Week is celebrated every year between 2nd October to 8th October incorporating Gandhi Jayanti. This week encourages every individual to give; be it time, money, resources or skills. The joy of giving week teaches us the many benefits of the “act of giving”.

Taking Mahatma Gandhi’s words to heart, a series of individuals, corporates, and NGOs in 2009 began celebrating the Joy of Giving Week, a “festival of philanthropy” that included efforts to create awareness, volunteering, and fundraising events.

Between November 2008 and February 2009, several individuals and NGO leaders got together and decided to launch an ‘India Giving Week’. Thus, in February 2014, volunteers renamed the festival ‘#DaanUtsav’, based on feedback received from several people living in various parts of India.
