Although there are elements we have not yet created or found in nature, scientists already know what they will be and can predict their properties. For example, element 125 has not been observed, but when it is, it will appear in a new row of the periodic table as a transition metal.

Why are scientists certain that there are no undiscovered elements missing from the periodic table from Hydrogen to lawrencium?

An element is by definition identified with the number of protons in its nucleus, the so-called atomic number. Any atom with 6 protons is carbon, it cannot be anything else. So there cannot be any missing elements out to 103, as all of these elements have been confirm discovered by accepted scientific methods.

How do we know that atoms exist?

There are three ways that scientists have proved that these sub-atomic particles exist. They are direct observation, indirect observation or inferred presence and predictions from theory or conjecture. Scientists in the 1800’s were able to infer a lot about the sub-atomic world from chemistry.

Why are there no missing elements in the periodic table?

Elements are defined by the number of protons in the nucleus. We have names, identified, and characterised the elements with between one and ten protons (and far beyond). Since protons cannot be split, there cannot be any unknown elements within the periodic table as we now know it.
