As a public institution, we prioritize admission for California residents. However, all of our campuses offer admission to out-of-state students.

UC systems are known for their approach in developing students that have strengths in research, theory and studies, while the CSU system is more developed for practical applications and non-research oriented career candidates.

Each UC campus evaluates each application without knowing the status of the same application at another campus. In making admission decisions, campuses do not consider where you’ve applied or your admission status to other campuses.

Despite a budget agreement in 2016 that the UC would limit its share of nonresident students to 18\% at most of its campuses, Berkeley, UCLA and UC San Diego were allowed to keep their nonresident enrollment steady at about 23\%. Other top public universities in the U.S. average closer to 30\%.

CSU is designed for the top one-third. Students who meet UC’s minimum requirements are entitled to a comprehensive review of their application. But the university only guarantees admission if they rank in the top 9\% of high school graduates statewide or at their local school. This guarantee ensures access to UC.

On top of these requirements, each campus has their own admissions standards which they follow. UC schools are generally more selective than CSU schools. However, remember selectivity can also vary by campus within each university system. If budget is a concern for you, then CSU may be a better choice.

Is UC or CSU more expensive for non residents?

Keep in mind that if you’re not a California resident, attending either of these university systems will be significantly more expensive. CSU charges non-residents an extra $372 per semester unit, while non-residents at UC pay an additional $22,878 in supplemental tuition.
