Can you see 2 different therapists at once?
Allowing two therapists is a set up for “splitting,”and it is totally counterproductive to that person having a successful therapy experience. Examples might be joining a group or going for EMDR therapy. There are sometimes particular reasons for a client to want two therapists.
What criteria should be used to determine if a therapist is competent?
Guidance for determining your competence is in Section 2 of APA’s Ethics Code. It calls for clinicians to have sufficient “education, training, supervised experience, consultation, study, or professional experience” in a given domain to practice in it competently.
When should you refer a client to another therapist?
Therapists should be ready to refer clients in cases when:
- They need specialized help outside of your areas of competency.
- The therapeutic relationship is unhealthy or unsafe.
- Treating the client affects your own mental health.
- You aren’t available to offer the sessions needed.

In the wellness model, going to therapy is like going to the gym. You go to make a good life better, to reach your potential, and to prevent problems in the future. There’s no mandatory end date for that. Imagine someone saying they’ve gone to the gym regularly for ten years.

Recognize that you are entitled to see whatever therapist you choose. Realize that sometimes separate therapists is a good thing! Individual + group therapy; individual + couples therapy can be excellent, even sometimes preferred, combinations!
