The only time you can’t cancel terms in the numerator and denominator is when they are both NOT factors.. The x is not a factor of the numerator; its just a term being added.

What is cross Cancelling?

Cross-canceling means that when we’re multiplying fractions, we can reduce any numerator with any denominator. In this example, 5 and 10 can both be divided by 5, even though they’re not in the same fraction.

How does cross Cancelling work?

Cross-cancellation is really a special version of simplifying fractions. You can only take advantage of it when multiplying or dividing fractions. You get the same answer if you multiply first, and then simplify, but it can be a lot more work. Cross-cancellation is just a shortcut, but a good one.

How do you multiply X’s?

Product Rule. Multiplying X with different exponents means that you multiply the same variables—in this case, “X”—but a different amount of times. You can see that we expand the variables with exponents into different amounts of variable iterations. The number of variables written equals the value of each exponent.

Unless we’re EXPLICITLY told that x does NOT equal zero (which does occur sometimes on the GRE), we CANNOT assume that it doesn’t equal 0. Therefore, it’s not possible to cancel x/x in this equation.

Why can’t we cancel 3x/x?

This is distinct from 3x/x, which we could NOT cancel, because there’s a possibility that the x on the bottom could equal 0. When you are trying to cancel factors, always be on the lookout for a possible combination that could equal zero in the bottom half of your cancellation.

Why can’t we cancel factors (x-1)/(x- 1)?

Dividing any number by 0 (ex. 6/0, x/0) will result in an undefined answer. This is not mathematically allowed and also a large reason why we aren’t able to cancel factors (x-1)/ (x-1) even though they’re the same. This can be kind of confusing – I know.
