Can flies sit on water?

When needed, drain flies can also stand on and leap from the surface of a pool of water. If they become submerged, their hair covering entraps a thin air layer (a plastron) over the surface of their entire body.

Why do flies hang around water?

What causes drain flies? Stagnant pools of water, particularly in pipes and other drainage areas, attract drain flies. These small, gnat-like insects feed on and breed in sewage. Organic material can build up along the side of drains quickly, welcoming drain flies to eat and reproduce.

If water gets on the wings and dries, it can make the wings dirty. Their wings are really big, so if they get wet, they can’t fly and take forever to dry out. Since these butterflies can’t clean their wings with their legs, they need to prevent them from getting wet in the first place.

Why do pennies in water keep flies away?
