Are piston rings directional?
There are bevels, twist, coatings, and various other things that make rings directional. There is typically writing or a dot on all first and second rings that indicate which side is up. In terms of location, some pistons have the same thickness top and second rings.
How do pistons rotate?
The piston is attached via a wrist pin to a connecting rod, which in turn is connected to the crankshaft, and together they turn the up and down (reciprocating) motion into round and round (rotational) motion to drive the wheels. The resulting explosion forces the piston downward, creating exhaust gases.
What happens if you put piston rings upside down?
With the taper of the ring upside down, oil will be scraped up with each upward stroke to be left in the combustion chamber and burned on the power stroke. It only takes a minute, check all rings on the piston for correct installation before installing the pistons.

Combustion gas pressure forces the piston ring against the cylinder wall to form a seal. Pressure applied to the piston ring is approximately proportional to the combustion gas pressure.
How tight should a piston be in the bore?
It should be three thousandths minimum. The fit of the ring in the piston may not allow the ring to fully collapse around the cylinder if the rings are checked out ok.
