Fixed-gear bikes, also known as fixies, have become quite common in recent years, and virtually everyone has seen one at some point. However, despite their distinct difference from other types of bikes, most people don’t realize they’ve seen one. It takes the sharp eye of a true bicycle enthusiast to recognize a fixie.

Fixies or fixed gear bikes can be described as a single-speed commuter push bike that’s built with a drive-train that doesn’t have a freewheel mechanism.

Unless it is custom-made or from a niche corner of the internet, BMX bikes are not fixed gear bikes. The reason being, BMX bikes need control to perform the stunts or tricks the rider intended, which fixed gear bikes cannot provide due to the lack of breaks and gear.
