Statistics show that the rate of growth for higher education enrollment is actually slowing. It’s no secret the higher education system has changed over the course of the past 20 years. Increased tuition, online classes and specific study areas are just a few examples of change in colleges nationwide.

How can college students make a difference?

Education can be used for the upliftment of society since it helps elevate the social and economic conditions in the marginalized sections of society. Education makes us better citizens by teaching us how to conduct ourselves through life by following rules and regulations and giving us a sense of conscience.

Are students today less mature than in the past?

College has always been demanding both academically and socially. But students now are less mature and often not ready for the responsibility of being in college. Many students today lack resilience and are unable to summon strategies to cope.

Is College more stressful today than in the past 10 years?

Our world is more stressful in general because of the current economic and political realities, but I don’t believe that the college experience itself is more intense today than the past 10 years. What I do think is that many students are often not prepared to be young “adults” with all the responsibilities of life.

Why don’t college students coping?

Parents, who handle every difficulty and every other responsibility for their children from writing admission essays to picking college courses, certainly may contribute to their children’s lack of coping strategies. But we can look even more broadly to the social trends of today.

How can we encourage young people to succeed in college?

As parents, teachers and coaches we should expect young people to meet challenges. To encourage them in this direction, we have to step back and let them fail and pick themselves up and move forward. This approach needs to begin at an early age so that college can actually be a passage to independent adulthood.
