Having chosen to be “united under the Dark Mark” (Voldemort’s words from Goblet of Fire) Team Dark Arts needed a name. “Death” (from the skull) and “Eaters” (from the mouth/snake detail) were the two front runners. They quickly decided that both names sounded pretty stupid, so someone suggested combining them.
