Why is there a graveyard in Queen Mary University?

Apparently, this cemetery is the remains of a Sephardic Jewish cemetery that existed in the area before the creation and expansion of the University. In 1974,the remains were apparently excavated at what’s left of the cemetery has been combined with an extant cemetery (Nuevo Cemetery) that was also in the area.

Yes, it’s safe, and it’s perfectly fine to walk around in the evenings. It can be quite busy – and at times that can mean a lot of people drinking. It’s not the most beautiful part of London, but it’s a good location, in terms of transport and proximity to fun areas such as Shoreditch.
