Can morals be selfish?

It is commonly believed that morality demands we choose between sacrificing other people to ourselves (which is deemed “selfish” and therefore immoral) and sacrificing our own values to satisfy others’ needs (which is deemed unselfish and therefore moral).

How can a person maintain good morals?

While morals tend to be driven by personal beliefs and values, there are certainly some common morals that most people agree on, such as:

  1. Always tell the truth.
  2. Do not destroy property.
  3. Have courage.
  4. Keep your promises.
  5. Do not cheat.
  6. Treat others as you want to be treated.
  7. Do not judge.
  8. Be dependable.

How do people form their morals?

In a nutshell, we create our own definition of morality through our interactions the people around us. Ideas about what is and what is not moral are guided by our unique human reasoning and intelligence, and not just by our feelings or gut reactions.

Is it natural to be selfish?

It is natural to be selfish. We are selfish creatures, at least as much as we are cooperative. But if your goal is personal and/ or spiritual growth, a sub-goal is to be less selfish and think of others. This requires an awareness of thinking or behaving in a selfish way.

If you are to selfish, then you are not caring about others, which is also unethical. So according to Aristotle’s virtue ethics, you should care about others, but not so much that you can’t fullfill any of your own interests or wishes.

Emotional and non-rational processes are plainly relevant to moral change. Indeed, one of the main drivers of moral change is human contact. When we associate with other people and share common goals, we extend to them our affection. As our social circle widens, so does our ‘moral circle’.

What happens when you lack morals?

Without such rules people would not be able to live amongst other humans. People could not make plans, could not leave their belongings behind them wherever they went. We would not know who to trust and what to expect from others. Civilized, social life would not be possible.
