Molds can be made from plaster, silicone, Sculpey’s Super Elasticlay, and other materials. Polymer clay-particularly scraps left over from other projects-can also be used to make molds. Make a mold from polymer clay. Whether you’re using flexible or regular clay, it should be well conditioned.

Can I put a plaster mold in the oven?

Plaster casts will dry in time, of course, by simply exposing them to air at room temperature. Most often, however, they are dried in a warm, forced-air oven, at about 150 degrees F. Higher temperatures tend to crack casts and produce spalling. In our experience the times generally required for drying in 150 degree F.

Instructions: Mix 1 part soap with 2-3 parts warm water. Brush onto clean plaster surface to seal. Wipe away excess with paper towel and allow drying time of 10-15 minutes. For Urethane rubber molds or castings: a release agent such as Pol-Ease 2300 may be applied after the soap has dried.
