Are you supposed to point a gun up or down?

Keep the gun pointed in the safest possible direction. Always be aware of where a gun is pointing. A “safe direction” is one where an accidental discharge of the gun will not cause injury or damage. Only point a gun at an object you intend to shoot.

Why must a gun barrel be pointed upward before firing?

When the bar on the rear sight is raised, the barrel of the rifle points slightly upwards compared to the sights. This compensates for bullet drop over a given range.

Always keep the gun unloaded until you are ready to use it. Never point the gun at anything you don’t intend to destroy. Be aware of your surroundings when handling guns so you don’t trip or lose your balance and accidentally point and/or fire the gun at anyone or anything.

Many handgun shooters use the “Sul” Position” as a “combat ready” position, both on the range and in the street. The Sul Position is characterized by the weapon hand being held close to the torso approximately at solar plexus level, muzzle down, with the support-hand in various positions as needed or trained.

Do gun barrels point upward?

The key point is that locking is accomplished by pushing the oversized rear end of the barrel up into the ejection port. Pulling the rear end downwards accomplishes unlocking. As a consequence, the barrel points slightly upwards, relative to the slide, while the gun is open.

Why do guns kick upwards?

The pivot point is the thumb behind the grip. The output is the grip, and the force against the grip holding it down against the recoil is the 4 fingers around the front of the grip. The reason it kicks up, is that the proper way to hold firearms is up. If held in any other direction, the kick is in that direction.
