Is it bad to put RAM right next to each other?

Is it bad to put RAM right next to each other?

A common misconception about RAM is that you can put any RAM into any slot. You can do that, but it won’t work, or it will work ineffectively. If you have four RAM slots, always buy matched pairs of RAM (two sticks from the same company, same speed, and same capacity) for the best results.

Why dont you put RAM next to each other?

1. Because that’s the way the slots are wired. 1 & 3 on one channel, 2 & 4 on the other channel. If that’s numbering the dimm slots sequentially going away from the CPU I’m not sure it’s correct if you want a dimm in each channel for dual channel operation.

Does it matter what side you install RAM?

Normally, you fill Bank 1 first and then bank 2. If the RAM is mismatched then you want to Place matching pairs together If all RAM is the same brand and size, then it does not matter. If you have 2 4GB RAM cards and 1 8 GB Card then the two 4GB cards go in slots 0&1. And the single 8GB card goes in slot 2.

Can RAM go either way?

You can try to compare the RAM connector with the slot. Try them with the logo/chips facing the nearest edge. They only go in one way so if that doesn’t work just flip it around.

Why are Rams installed next to each other on motherboards?

Thus Rams are therefore installed right next to each other. On many motherboards, installing 2 rams, of similar make, capacity and speed, will produce what is called Dual channel mode. This mode speeds up memory.

What happens if you put Ram in the wrong direction?

RAM only fits into the slot on the motherboard in one direction. The row of gold pins is notched and will line up with an area of the channel with no sockets in it. If you try to install your RAM stick backward, you will damage the pins on the RAM card and probably the slot on the motherboard as well. RAM Slots on a Laptop

What happens if you put 2 RAM slots on a motherboard?

Ram slots on motherboards are placed alongside each other. Thus Rams are therefore installed right next to each other. On many motherboards, installing 2 rams, of similar make, capacity and speed, will produce what is called Dual channel mode. This mode speeds up memory.

What happens when you have the same amount of memory in RAM?

With equal amounts of memory in both slots, memory can be interleaved so that successive chunks of memory alternate slots. That way, memory access gets distributed to both slots almost perfectly evenly, allowing their bandwidth to combine.
